FAQ

I can't play this format because I don't have really old cards, right?
Historically some of the most played cards in the old format were Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, Serra Angel, Giant Growth, and Hypnotic Spectre to name a few, along with many other affordable cards that are still seeing print today.
Do we use old rules too, like mana burn and stuff?
No, Magic: Redux uses current rules.
Can I play Foil cards?
You may play any printings of cards that are legal in the format.
Including foreign language cards?
Including foreign language cards.
Why are some color hosers (like Circle of Protection) banned?
  • The more extreme color hosers are only fun for the person doing the hosing.
  • The existence of these cards can (and did back in the day) prohibit some deck types from existing at all.
  • They can be just plain unfair. (Notice that cards like this are no longer printed in newer sets.)
  • Note that Greater Realm of Preservation is still allowed. It has a more balanced activation cost than the CoP's and is thematically correct since it affects only enemy colors.
Why ban Power Artifact?
The infinite mana combo of Basalt Monolith/Power Artifact didn't exist back in the day due to the errata stating that the mana gained from Basalt Monolith cannot be used to untap any Basalt Monolith OR Mana Vault.
Can I play the cards that were banned by Wizards of the Coast because they were deemed offensive (Cleanse, Crusade, Imprison, Invoke Prejudice, Jihad, Pradesh Gypsies, Stone-Throwing Devils)?
They are allowed in most old school formats including Redux.
The heck is an "Enchant World"?
Enchant Worlds were enchantments with a special rule that only one could be in play at a time. Now called World Enchantments (enchantments with the supertype "world"), they interact via a "world rule" that's similar to the legend rule. When a new World Enchantment comes into play, any other World Enchantments go away.
Rule 420.5i: If two or more permanents have the supertype world, all except the one that has been a permanent with the world supertype in play for the shortest amount of time are put into their owners' graveyards. In the event of a tie for the shortest amount of time, all are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "world rule."
